Everything you need to know about Holotropic Breathwork®

Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful approach to self-exploration and healing developed by Dr. Stanislav Grof. It combines accelerated breathing, evocative music, and focused bodywork in a safe, supportive environment. The practice allows access to non-ordinary states of consciousness that can facilitate profound healing, self-discovery, and spiritual growth.
During a Holotropic Breathwork session, you will lie down with your eyes closed and use accelerated breathing to enter an expanded state of awareness. Music will guide your journey, and trained facilitators will be present to support you. Sessions typically last 2-3 hours, followed by mandala drawing and group sharing. Each experience is unique and unfolds according to your inner wisdom.
No prior experience is necessary. Holotropic Breathwork is accessible to anyone who is physically and mentally healthy. Our facilitators will guide you through the entire process, and you will be supported every step of the way.
When practiced under the guidance of certified facilitators and with proper screening, Holotropic Breathwork is safe. Yes, absolutely. Trained facilitators are present throughout the entire session. You will also have a designated "sitter" — a partner who remains with you to ensure your safety and provide support if needed. The facilitators are experienced in supporting a wide range of experiences and emergencies.
Eat a light meal 2-3 hours before the session. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Come with an open mind and set an intention for your session. Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs for at least 24 hours before. Get adequate rest the night before. We will provide detailed preparation guidelines upon registration.
Bring comfortable clothing for breathwork, a journal for integration, water bottle, any medications you need, and an eye mask if you prefer. For retreats, also bring toiletries, bedding (if specified), and comfortable casual clothes. We provide mats, blankets, and all breathwork materials.
Yes, but keep it light. Have a small meal or snack 2-3 hours before the session. Avoid heavy, greasy, or large meals. Being overly full or hungry can interfere with your experience. You can eat normally after the session concludes.
Our facilitator training in Bangalore is a comprehensive 600-hour program spread across six modules over 2-3 years. It includes theoretical study, personal breathwork experiences, supervised practice facilitation, integration work, and mentorship. The training combines Grof Transpersonal Training methodology with Father KC Thomas's unique insights and Indian spiritual wisdom.
No, you do not need to be a licensed therapist to train as a Holotropic Breathwork facilitator. The training is open to anyone with a sincere commitment to their own healing and growth, and a calling to serve others. Many facilitators come from diverse backgrounds including healthcare, education, yoga, bodywork, and other helping professions.
The complete certification program takes 2-3 years and consists of six week-long modules, plus additional breathwork experiences and practicum hours. Modules are typically scheduled 3-6 months apart to allow for integration and practice between trainings.
A full session day typically runs 8-10 hours and includes: opening circle (1 hour), breathwork session (2.5-3 hours breathing time), mandala drawing (45 minutes), sharing circle (1-2 hours), and closing. Retreat formats may include multiple sessions over several days.
Music is essential to the Holotropic Breathwork experience. We use carefully curated music sets that support the journey through different phases: opening and activation, deep exploration, breakthrough and release, and peaceful integration. The music helps guide the experience and provides a sonic container for your inner process.
Yes, most people find that regular sessions deepen their process. We recommend spacing sessions at least 2-4 weeks apart to allow for integration. Monthly breathwork circles and retreat formats provide ongoing opportunities for practice. Many people maintain a regular breathwork practice over years as part of their healing and growth journey.
After the breathing portion, you will create a mandala drawing to help integrate your experience. This is followed by a group sharing circle where participants can share insights and experiences. We also provide integration support and encourage journaling and self-reflection in the days following the session.
